The Bush 11 were on the various cable shout shows. Obama’s guy was on all of the big five Sunday network shows, including the broadcast networks. Who got the better exposure?

Answer: The people on the cable shout shows, of course. Is that some kind of trick…

The whole “sending out Donilon with a low-key message that included credit for Obama’s predecessor was a precision move,” thing would have been a better place to start the argument, rather than the whole “yesterday’s key metric isn’t actually a key metric anymore, I just decided” part.  I agree, Stewart’s not much for political strategy.  That said, it must have been on a previous show, but as I recall, he actually did deliver up the very same Dowdian “ninja vs. the flight suit” comparative jape. 

Furthermore, I think that what paces the complaint of the lack of aggressive pushback is that while it’s all fine and dandy to be the bigger man and pass around the credit, where it’s due, there are ongoing arguments that are just as important about the path taken to the prize. For example: did it involve torture? (David Yoo was in that posse, after all.) And that’s an argument that’s been less well tended to.  Oh, I’m sorry!  I meant to say “abandoned.” I know that Obama’s re-election  depends pretty heavily on doing some hardcore not looking back/not holding anyone accountable for those bad old days, and the successful implantation of the idea that that stuff is all okay when the guy in the white cowboy hat does it, but there are some people to whom that stuff matters. (I’d wager “the staff of MOTHER JONES” is among them.)
